The Meaning of Black History Month…

I celebrate Black History year-round however, I do recognize that the month of February was chosen for specific reasons. According to http://www.britannica.comCarter G. Woodson (born December 19, 1875, New Canton, Virginia, U.S.—died April 3, 1950, Washington, D.C.) was an American historian who first opened the long-neglected field of Black studies to scholars and popularized the field in schools and colleges across the United States. He established, in 1926, what became Black History Month, and he came to be known as the “father of Black history…..He chose February, so that this event coincided with the birth dates of two men important to Black history: Frederick Douglass, who celebrated his birthday on February 14, and Abraham Lincoln, born February 12.”

We also celebrate Black History Month here in Canada and in a previous post I shared a segment I had done about black history in Canada and what it means to be “Black in Canada” you can find it here: Being Black in Canada.

I also wanted to share an article from BuzzFeed showcasing amazing Canadian black-owned brands to try, enjoy 🙂 https://www.buzzfeed.com/tdcanada/canadian-black-owned-small-businesses-2024

Stay blessed.
